Dr Dannielle Slager (Podiatrist) – Oct 8, 2026
If you have a painful ingrown toenail and you’re considering surgery, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is: how much does it cost?
At Spring Podiatry in Melton, first you will need an initial consultation ($165) to assess the toenail, discuss whether surgery is the right treatment option for you, and then plan for surgery.
If surgery is the recommended solution, then ingrown toenail surgery costs $750 for one toe, and $250 for each additional toe. This is an all-inclusive price covering the surgical appointment, local anaesthetic, procedure itself, dressings, and follow-up appointments.
Ingrown Toenail Surgery Pricing (updated October 2026)
| Item | Description | Private Health Code | Price |
| Initial Consultation – Nail / Skin | The first appointment with your podiatrist for assessment, surgical discussion and planning. | F004 | $165 +$20 extra for appointments scheduled after 6pm, or on Saturdays. |
| Partial Nail Avulsion Procedure – One Toe |
This is the most common procedure, where the ingrown portion of the affected toenail is removed. | F546 | $750 |
| Partial Nail Avulsion Procedure – Additional Toes | If more than one toenail is affected, and they are able to be operated on at the same time. | F548 | $250 ea |
| Total Nail Avulsion Procedure – One Toe |
This is a procedure where the entire affected toenail is removed. | F547 | $750 |
Please note: an initial consultation is always required before booking in for surgery. Therefore the total minimum investment will be $165 + $750 = $915.
Can I Claim it on Private Health Insurance?
Yes, if you have private health insurance, AND you have podiatry included as part of your “extras cover”, then you may be able to claim a rebate on the cost of the appointment and/or surgery. This would mean that you would only have to pay the “gap” of whatever was remaining after your rebate. The exact rebate that you receive will depend on the level of cover you have, so varies from person to person. If you require assistance, our team can perform a quote for you at the time of your initial appointment, or over the phone.
Does Medicare Cover any of it?
Standard Medicare does not ordinarily cover podiatry consultations or ingrown toenail procedures performed by a podiatrist. If you book an appointment with your GP beforehand, you can however discuss whether you are eligible for a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP). This would allow you to have up to five (5) consultations with a podiatrist per year to be partially rebated through Medicare. The rebate amount is $63.40, so the total amount rebateable is up to $317. We would be able to spread this across your nail surgery and review appointments to help you to recover some of the cost. It is important to note however that your GP has to deem you eligible for this scheme, and if so, the rebate is processed AFTER full payment has been received (i.e. it is not a discount – you still have to be able to pay the full amount for the surgery up front).
What Determines the Cost of Ingrown Toenail Surgery?
Private podiatry clinics choose their pricing for ingrown toenail procedures based on a number of factors, which we are happy to discuss:
What makes ingrown toenail surgery pricing more expensive?
- More time allocated towards the appointment.
- More inclusions, i.e. how the total cost of the surgery is packaged.
- The podiatrists expertise and experience level.
- Demand of the podiatrist for ingrown toenail surgery.
- The running costs to the business for ingrown toenail surgeries, such as consumables, sterilisation, continuing professional development, and wages.
- How many toenails require surgery. As stated above, there is usually an additional charge for each extra toe.
What makes ingrown toenail surgery pricing cheaper?
- Less time allocated towards the appointment.
- Non-packaging of the total surgical cost. E.g., some clinics have a lower surgery cost, but charge extra for consumables and follow up appointments.
- Lower level of experience or confidence in performing the procedure.
- Less demand. A clinic may simply not be as busy, and not perform ingrown toenail surgeries very often.
- Lower running costs to the business.
Where Do Our Prices Fall, and Why?
Our podiatrists at Spring Podiatry in Melton have a special interest in ingrown toenail surgery. For this reason, we put a lot of time and effort into improving this service to be as high quality as it can be.
✅ We allow one hour minimum for surgical appointments. This ensures that you feel comfortable, settled, well informed, and that the podiatrist doesn’t have to rush through the procedure. We pride ourselves on thorough, educational consultations, and attention to detail in the procedure itself.
✅ We bundle the cost of your surgical appointment, local anaesthetic, dressings, and follow-up appointments into the prices stated above. This means that you only have to pay once, making it simpler and potentially more cost effective for you.
✅ Our podiatrists are very experienced in ingrown toenail surgery, and have undertaken extra training in infection control. Dr Dannielle Slager (Podiatrist) has even presented at the international conference “Foot and Ankle Show”, teaching other podiatrists her “Ingrown Toenail Surgery Tips and Tricks”, which was very well received presentation across the industry.
✅ We perform multiple ingrown toenail surgeries per week, and therefore invest in high quality tools and consumables, and maintain rigorous infection control and sterilisation protocols.
For all of the above reasons, we price ourselves relatively high compared to other podiatry clinics. We value our time and expertise, and always strive for the best possible process and outcome for our patients.
Is the Cost of Ingrown Toenail Surgery Worth it?
The answer to this depends on a number of factors, with a common denominator being the severity of the ingrown toenail.
Ingrown toenails present on a spectrum of severity, from minor inconveniences that can be managed conservatively, all the way up to severely infected toenails that obviously require surgery.
If your ingrown toenail is more towards the severe end of the spectrum, then surgery could be inevitable, and the cost of delaying it may actually be to your health, rather than your wallet. An untreated ingrown toenail can become infected, which if left long enough can become a medical emergency.
In less severe cases, your podiatrist will be able to help you with the decision as to whether surgery is a good option for you. You may wish to compare the investment of surgery, to the cost of ongoing podiatry appointments for conservative care. For example, to see a podiatrist five times per year may cost you ~$500-$700 per year, to help keep your ingrown toenail comfortable without needing surgery. Surgery on the other hand is usually a permanent solution.
Ultimately, the decision is yours, and we want the best outcome for you. Our team will be more than happy to answer any questions that you have before you commit to anything.
